Lila’Angelique bio:

Thoth Bio: For the most part, my ancestry is lost in the past because of slavery and other interruptive influences. However, I’ve been able to deduce a bit of what it is: African, Scottish/Irish, Carib Indian (Mayan) from my mother whose family comes from Barbados; and Russian, Rumanian, Roma (Gypsy), Hebrew (Jewish) from my father. In the end, or the beginning, depending on how you look at it, I have been able to trace myself back to all peoples. I have a part of everyone in me.

How did I start doing this? I got hit by lightning! No – I studied, practiced and dreamed while maintaining an unquenchable desire to become fully who I am despite all the illusory boundaries. Plus, timely synchronous assistance from many special teachers (most who didn’t even know they were teaching) who have come into my life at the perfect time.

Some people recognize aspects of ancient pre-Egyptian and Mayan in my costume, but the costume is from the country of my dreams – the Festad. Through experimentation, improvisation, and exploration of clothing, I was led to this costume. It is in the colors of my spirit: active red for the passion of my expression; neutral gold for spiritual and physical prosperity; and passive black for the resting of all colors. My chakras are circled and focused. I am in chains and yet free.

Click here to view the embedded video.

My namesake, Thoth, was a high priest of ancient Egypt and the diety of scribes, wisdom, communication and mathematics. I took the name because it symbolizes an important point in my spiritual development when I transited from Greece (Hermes) to Africa (Thoth).

How it all got started . . .

Opera Collective was formed to create performance opportunities and a support structure in which singers and pianists share ideas and constructive criticism in a safe environment.

Mission Statement

Our mission is to make opera accessible and affordable to the general public by presenting engaging evenings of vocal music, including opera, art song, operetta and musical theatre.

Our young, vibrant and professional performers strive to break down the stereotypes that are often associated with opera with their lively and varied shows, which often include juicy plot details to set the scene for the audience.

Apart from concerts that Opera Collective produces themselves, they can perform in a wide variety of occasions; including restaurants, receptions, weddings, art events, and more.

Our members have performed with companies such as Opera Colorado, Sarasota Opera, the Caramoor Festival, Connecticut Opera, Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, Dicapo Opera and New Jersey Verismo Opera, and in venues such as Carnegie Hall, London’s Wigmore Hall and Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center.

Our History

Opera Collective was founded in August of 2005. We currently consist of 10 core members, with rotating singers and pianists on our roster. Opera Collective is an active part of the Music Under New York program, and performs twice a week at various spots throughout Manhattan. We have been featured three times in the “Summer Sundays Series” at Snug Harbor Cultural Center on Staten Island and we perform regularly at Piola, an Italian Restaurant near Union Square. We have done educational outreach in NY and CT, and hope to continue to teach students about opera. We gave our Manhattan debut concert in November of 2006 in collaboration with Kids & Dreamers Productions, and in November of 2007 collaborated with them again in a scenes program based on the 7 Deadly Sins. Opera Collective has also been featured on NHK’s documentary series “New York Streets”.

Bio: (John Hetland, director) We perform in any place that’s reasonably quiet and has people passing by, preferably with a wall behind us to reflect the sound. Some of our favorite spots are Christopher Street near Bleecker in the West Village, Montague Street in Brooklyn Heights, Central Park tunnels and walkways, and the stone steps in Fort Tryon Park.

When I came to New York in 1965 I wanted to join a chorus of some sort. Someone told me about The Renaissance Chorus. It had been started about 1950 at the High School of Music and Art by the composer Harold Brown, a pioneer of early music in America who, among other accomplishments, introduced Noah Greenberg to Renaissance music. When I joined the Renaissance Chorus (’65 or ’66) it was led by Joel Meltz, who revered Harold Brown almost as a god. People generally either were devoted to Joel or couldn’t stand him. He had a notion that singers should look at the conducter all the time, not just sometimes, and should sing absolutely perfectly in tune. He ascribed near magical qualities to in-tune intervals, particularly solid fifths and bright major thirds. He believed Renaissance music, properly deployed, could end wars and change the world. When I first joined we met in the basement of the Washington Square Methodist Church on West Fourth Street, later at Joel’s slum dwelling on East Fifth Street. We didn’t have many singing gigs, but from time to time we would go out in the neighborhood and sing for passers-by. I thrived on it. I was devoted to Joel. Years later, when I started my own group, singing in the street seemed the obvious way to find an audience.
